RABBIT HAY GUIDES · SINGAPORE
Your rabbit can dislike timothy and still enjoy hay
Before writing off hay altogether, separate a texture preference from a change in appetite.
Timothy is one grass hay, not the only suitable one. If your rabbit eats another grass hay normally but leaves timothy, build from what they enjoy. Orchard or oat can offer a different texture.
NC State: grass hays for adult rabbits ↗A sudden drop in eating, fewer droppings or a wet chin needs a prompt vet check. Eating some pellets does not rule out a problem. PDSA: reduced appetite ↗
Change one feature you can actually see
Lay out a handful of the timothy being left. Is it mostly stiff stems? Soft leaves? Dusty fragments? Then choose a small, fresh sample with a clear contrast.
| If you want to explore… | Look at… |
|---|---|
| A softer texture | Leafier hay or orchard grass. Oxbow describes its orchard as softer than its timothy. |
| More crunch | Oat hay with firmer stems; inspect the actual product. |
| A familiar grass, different feel | Another batch of timothy. Bags can vary. |
Texture examples: Oxbow’s hay guide.
Watch chewing, then choose the next bag
Offer a little of one new hay alongside any familiar hay being eaten. Keep the same feeding spot, introduce gradually, and note which leaves or stems your rabbit returns to. A sniff or a tug is less useful than seeing hay chewed.
If grass hay is eaten well, you do not need to make timothy the winner. If all hay is being left, work through freshness, portions and feeding access with veterinary advice where needed.
