RABBIT HAY GUIDES · SINGAPORE
Try oat hay without giving up the timothy they love
A small trial can answer a useful question: will your rabbit actually eat this hay?
Keep familiar timothy freely available and introduce a little oat hay alongside it. Start with one small pack, watch chewing over several ordinary feeding times, and increase gradually if your rabbit eats it comfortably.
PDSA: introduce food changes gradually ↗Set up a small tasting
- Start from a normal day. This is for a rabbit eating normally. Keep pellets, greens and the feeding routine unchanged.
- Offer a little oat hay. Use a clean, accessible spot beside the usual hay. Leave the familiar supply available throughout.
- Record three observations. Was oat hay chewed? Did your rabbit return to it? Were appetite and droppings normal?
Watch more than one ordinary feeding visit before deciding whether to buy more.
Make the next purchase match what you saw
| What you observe | A practical next step |
|---|---|
| Returns to oat and chews it | Keep offering it alongside timothy; increase gradually if all stays normal. |
| Only sniffs, scatters or carries it | Look for actual chewing before buying more. |
| Eats timothy normally, leaves oat | Keep the familiar hay. A larger oat bag is not needed yet. |
If overall eating or droppings decrease, contact a vet rather than continuing a taste test. PDSA’s appetite guidance ↗
Both hays are now familiar? You can offer them together.
