Oat hay: just a treat, or everyday hay?

The word “oat” can make a grass hay sound like a cereal snack.

Yes. Suitable oat hay can be a main hay for a healthy adult rabbit, or offered alongside another grass hay. Merck Veterinary Manual lists oat among the grass hays adults can have freely available. It does not have to be limited to an occasional treat.

Check what is in this particular bag

  • Ingredients: look for oat hay; check whether other ingredients have been added.
  • Feeding directions: use the maker’s guidance for that product, alongside any diet prescribed for your rabbit.
  • The actual hay: examine the leaves, stems, aroma and condition. The name alone will not tell you the texture.

For example, Oxbow’s plain Oat Hay lists oat hay as its ingredient and gives daily grass-hay feeding directions.

Everyday hay still needs a gradual introduction

Keep familiar timothy available while introducing a little oat hay. If your rabbit enjoys both, you can continue with both. If oat becomes the main hay, keep a generous clean supply available throughout the day.

Choose by regular eating and body condition as well as preference. The Rabbit Doctors notes that some oat hays can be higher in sugar than other hays; a rabbit needing a prescribed diet should stay on that plan. Read the practice’s oat-hay guidance ↗
