RABBIT HAY GUIDES · SINGAPORE

Turn your rabbit’s usual hay into a treasure hunt

Start with a tray, some hay and a few pellets from the day’s usual ration.

Scatter a few of the day’s pellets through a loose pile of familiar hay. Your rabbit can sniff, move strands aside and find them. Keep the ordinary hay supply freely available; the search is an extra activity.

RSPCA: simple food-searching activities ↗

Make the first hunt easy to finish

  1. Measure the usual daily pellet ration first. Take a few pellets from it for the activity.
  2. Scatter them in a shallow tray of loose hay. Leave some visible near the top so your rabbit can find a first reward easily.
  3. Watch the search. If food cannot be reached, loosen the hay. Remove wet or soiled material after use.

Once the tray is being used, try the same idea in a stable, open cardboard box with easy access. Use plain cardboard without tape or staples and supervise the first session.

Adapted from RSPCA’s foraging advice and cardboard enrichment ideas.

Watch how your rabbit uses it

Sniffing, moving strands aside and retrieving food show the hunt in use. If it is ignored, try a usual active time before making it harder. With a pair, offer separate trays so each rabbit can join in.

If your rabbit already enjoys foraging and you want another texture to explore, consider one additional grass hay.
