RABBIT HAY GUIDES · SINGAPORE

Can your senior rabbit reach the hay comfortably?

Start with the route, the reach and a steady place to stand.

Watch one meal from your rabbit’s level. Can they walk to the hay without slipping, enter the feeding area easily and eat without awkward stretching? If one part looks difficult, start by adjusting that spot.

RWAF: practical changes to the home ↗

1. Watch how they reach the hay

Look from your rabbit’s level. Can they eat in a relaxed position, without stretching up or climbing to reach their daily supply? Adjust the feeder to the rabbit’s posture.

If they like eating beside the litter tray, keep clean hay within reach there. Choose a low-entry tray if stepping over the side has become difficult, and replace soiled hay.

2. Give a stable water bowl a place

Try a heavy ceramic bowl on a level surface. Position it where your rabbit can drink comfortably and keep it clear of litter and splashes into the hay.

You can leave a familiar bottle available as well. Check and refresh the water daily, and keep clean water available at all times.

3. Check the route to the meal

  1. Give their feet grip. Put a secure, washable non-slip surface along the route and at the feeding spot.
  2. Reduce awkward steps. Keep everyday food and water accessible on the main level.
  3. Watch the next meal. Check whether they approach, enter the tray and settle to eat comfortably.

RWAF: flooring and access adaptations

Keep space for comfortable movement. If reaching food remains difficult or movement has changed, discuss it with your vet. For a change in eating itself, see the hay-eating checklist.
